Show/hide table
( 1 ) For the Power Train ECM, the MID is 081. This table pertains only to diagnostic codes with a MID of 081.

Note: This table shows the diagnostic codes for the power train ECM only. The diagnostic codes for the ECM are shown on the display area of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The information of the diagnostic code for the ECM is transferred via the Cat data link to the Caterpillar Monitoring System. This diagnostic information is shown when the Caterpillar Monitoring System is in the service mode. The module identifier (MID) tells the service person the ECM that is sending the diagnostic code. The MID for the power train ECM is 081. This Service Manual is used for diagnostic codes with the MID 081. The Electrical System Schematic shows the module identifier (MID) codes of any other electronic controls on a machine. Information for electronic troubleshooting of the diagnostic codes (MID is not 081) can be found in the service manual for that system.

The Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) is located on the front dash in the operator compartment. The EMS consists of an action alarm, action light (1), and monitoring panel (2). The monitoring panel includes an individual alert indicator for each machine system that is listed on the monitoring panel.

The EMS is designed to alert the operator to an immediate problem with any of the machine systems that are monitored. The EMS is also designed to alert the operator to an impending problem with any of the machine systems that are monitored. The action light and the individual alert indicators will light when a problem occurs.

EMS Functional Test

To ensure the proper operation of the EMS, check the system daily.

The battery disconnect switch must be in the ON position in order to supply electrical power to the machine.

Panel Test Switch (4) - While the engine is not running, push up on the panel test switch in order to test the EMS. All alert indicators should come on and the action light should blink until panel test switch (1) is released. The panel test switch will return to the OFF position when the panel test switch is released.

If the alert indicators or action light (1) do not come on, the electrical system must be checked. Perform all necessary repairs before you start the engine.

If all of the alert indicators and action light (1) come on, start the engine. Repeat the panel test with the engine running. Move panel test switch (4) to the ON position. All alert indicators and action light (1) should come on again. The action alarm should also sound.

If any of the alert indicators or the action light do not come on or action alarm (1) does not sound, stop the engine. Check the electrical system and the machine system. Perform all necessary repairs before you start the engine.

Warning Categories

The Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) provides three warning categories. The first warning category requires only operator awareness. The second warning category requires an operator response. The third warning category requires immediate shutdown of the machine systems.

Warning Category 1

In this category, only the alert indicator comes on. This category alerts the operator that the machine system needs attention. Failure of these systems will not endanger the operator. Failure of these systems will not cause serious damage to the machine components.

Parking Brake (5) - This alert indicator shows that the parking brake is engaged and that the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position. The alert indicator should come on during engine start-up. The alert indicator should go out when the parking brake is disengaged.

Alternator (6) - This alert indicator shows that the alternator is malfunctioning. If this alert indicator comes on, stop the machine at a convenient location. Investigate the cause of the problem. The cause of the problem could be a loose belt, a broken belt, etc. Do not operate the machine until the cause of the problem has been corrected.

Warning Category 2

In this category, the alert indicator and the action light come on. This category requires a change in machine operation in order to reduce excessive temperature in one of the machine systems or more.

Show/hide table

Illustration 5g00689018

Coolant Temperature (7) - This alert indicator shows excessive coolant temperature. If this alert indicator comes on, reduce the operating speed of the machine. Keep the engine at low idle until the engine is cooled down. If the alert indicator should stay on for several minutes after running the engine at low idle, stop the engine. Investigate the cause of the problem.

Do not operate the machine if the alert indicator stays on and the action light flashes. Make any necessary repairs.

Show/hide table

Transmission Electrical System (8) - This alert indicator shows an electrical fault in the transmission electrical system. Stop the machine at a convenient location if the indicator stays on. Investigate the cause of the problem. Do not operate the machine if the alert indicator stays on and the action light flashes.

Hydraulic Oil Temperature (9) - This alert indicator shows excessive hydraulic oil temperature. If this alert indicator comes on, reduce the load on the hydraulic system. Stop the machine at a convenient location if the alert indicator stays on. Investigate the cause of the problem. Do not operate the machine if the alert indicator stays on and the action light flashes.

Warning Category 3

In this category, the alert indicator and the action light come on and the action alarm sounds. This category requires immediate shutdown of the machine in order to prevent injury to the operator and/or severe damage to the machine.

Parking Brake (13) - This alert indicator notifies the operator that the parking brake is engaged. Stop the machine immediately if all of the following conditions occur:
  • The alert indicator turns on.
  • The action light turns on.
  • The action alarm sounds.

Engage the parking brake and stop the engine. Investigate the cause of the problem.

Do not operate the machine until the cause of the problem has been corrected.
