SoundFont 32Mb GM Stereo Set This big GM Set is a result of the research of our experts and sound-engineers, aimed to achieve pro quality sound when playing back a standard GM file. This is a great GM set for a full and authentic sounding backing band with General Midi Files. It sounds great with the Sweet Midi app for iOS and other soundfont players. There are available DAWs (like Cubase) or some free programs that support sf2 like LMMS or Cantibile with an sf2 player plugin installed, but probably the best no-fuss option is the free standalone player from Plogue called sforzando (which will convert sf2 to sfz).
SoundFont the brand name that referred to sample-based synthesis in early sound cards to playback MIDI. There was no where near enough data available on disk for an mp3! You needed the sound font stored on your sound card to turn that midi data into a more musical result. Often used in games and later mobile phones they created a generation hooked on general Midi.
Although it was never intended as a way to compose music, the sounds have become classic tools for dance and hiphop producers.

NI’s Kontakt has largely replaced the soundfont and alternatives have sprung up that enhance the concept like ReFX’s Nexus. While they replace the need for soundfonts, they are often expensive investments. Soundfonts are free, can contain hundreds of sounds from orchestral to drums and evoke the past.

This list is updated when/if I get new soundfonts. A lot of download time was spent on these. Some are most likely no longer available. Please note that this list does not include GM sets in other formats (e.g., GUS PAT files, Creative ECW wavesets), with the exception of VSTs and soft synths which are shown after the soundfont list. There are of course many others that I don't have, such as the Provitamin GM and Voice Crystal 4 MB commercial sets to name a few. Perhaps you may like to try some of the soundfonts in my list if you don't have them. A few of these are still being updated by the authors, and therefore the current versions of some soundfonts may be higher than what is listed here. Sizes are of the uncompressed sf2 files. If you have questions, then feel free to ask. If you can't find where to get one, then ask and I'll give the soundfont's download page (if it still exists). Please note that I probably will not re-upload these soundfonts due to copyright reasons (unless the SF2 is not available anywhere else), and I will not provide any warez links for the commercial soundfonts or VSTs.
